What is Face Fit Testing?
Face fit testing checks that a tight-fitting facepiece (such as a disposable mask, half mask, or full face respirator) forms an adequate seal against the wearer's face. Without a proper fit, respiratory protective equipment cannot provide the level of protection it is designed to deliver.
Why do we need Face Fit Testing?
Where respiratory protective equipment (RPE) is used, it must provide adequate protection for individual wearers. RPE can't protect the wearer if it leaks. A major cause of leaks is poor fit — tight-fitting facepieces need to fit the wearer's face to be effective. As people come in all shapes and sizes, it is unlikely that one type or size of RPE will fit everyone.
Who should be tested?
All wearers of tight-fitting face pieces require a fit test. This includes disposable half masks, re-usable filter or cartridge half masks, full face filter or cartridge masks, and escape set masks including SCBA masks.
What are the legal requirements?
Under COSHH regulations and HSE guidance (INDG479), employers must ensure that RPE is adequate and suitable, which includes ensuring it fits correctly. Fit testing is a legal requirement for all tight-fitting RPE. Non-compliance can result in enforcement action and prosecution. Tests should be repeated at regular intervals and when there are changes to the wearer's face.
